We Need Your Help
to Help Those in Need
Thank
you for your interest in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Disease
Treatment and Research Center at UCSF (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s
disease). The Center uses a unique comprehensive, multidisciplinary
approach to our patient care, offering a wide variety of services
including outreach, education, research opportunities, and clinical
services. This team approach allows our patients to be advised by
10 professionals in one day rather than going to multiple appointments
over many weeks.
ALS is the most common motor neuron disease in adults and our goal
is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for patients
and families affected by ALS and to discover the causes and effective
treatments for the disease. Through our clinical and research efforts,
people with ALS are living longer and feeling better.
We are currently involved in a number of research projects including
drug, genetic and physiological studies, translational research and trials of the efficacy
of various treatments.
We are on the verge of discovering therapies that could transform
the prognosis for this debilitating and life threatening disease.
We are committed to our goal to prevent and cure ALS disease and
the promise for success has never been greater. However, we can
only do it with your financial support.
Our clinic is required to be financially self-sustaining but this
is difficult because insurance only covers less than 10% of our operating
costs.
Significant additional resources are urgently needed to continue
our very important and vital work at the ALS Treatment and Research
Center at UCSF. I invite you to be part of the cure.
With best wishes,
Catherine Lomen-Hoerth, M.D., Ph.D.
