Professor of Clinical Neurology and Neurological Surgery
Kenneth Rainin Chair in Neurocritical Care
Co-Director, UCSF Brain & Spinal Injury Center
Director, Neurocritical Care, SFGH
Box #: 0870
Dr. Claude Hemphill is Co-Director of the UCSF Brain and Spinal Injury Center, and Director of the Neurocritical Care Program at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Hemphill received his medical degree from Emory University and completed his residency in neurology and fellowships in critical care medicine and neurocritical care/stroke at UCSF. He is a neurointensivist with specialty interest in head injury and intracranial hemorrhage. SFGH is the San Francisco County trauma center where patients with significant neurotrauma are treated, in addition to anyone in proximity who has a neurological emergency.
His clinical and research interests have included (1) intracerebral hemorrhage and (2) advanced neuromonitoring in neurocritical care. His National Institutes of Health-funded research has focused on secondary brain injury in intracerebral hemorrhage and the new NETT (Neurological Emergency Treatment Trials network) for which he is PI of SF-NET (the San Francisco site).
Dr. Hemphill is a founding director and current officer (secretary) of the Neurocritical Care Society. He is a member of various professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Stroke Association and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Neurocritical Care. Additionally, he regularly presents lectures at national and international meetings on advances in neurocritical care, brain injury, and stroke, with an emphasis on practical clinical implementation.
Dr. Hemphill's research interests include:
- * Intracranial Hemorrhage
- * Head injury
- * Advanced neuromonitoring of brain oxygenation and metabolism
